Consultation is necessary to establish your medical and vaccination history. Information is also collected on your travel destination and itinerary. The travel health nurse will use this information to tailor your consult to your individual needs. The consultation will provide you with information on how to stay safe and healthy during your travel. If you have a complex medical condition(s) the nurse will refer you to speak with our physician to ensure you are provided with the best possible advice prior to travel.
Vaccinations are done at the same appointment. If an additional dose of vaccine is needed, that will be booked for another time.
The staff at Whitehorse Travel Health Clinic are experienced and trained in the area of travel health medicine, so the information given in our consults is tailored specifically for your health needs and itinerary. The travel health nurse works directly with a physician to give you the highest quality of service.
Every consult is different and it is important to take the time to review your health history. We take the time to ensure your needs are met prior to travel.
A family doctor is able to give you prescriptions for vaccines that are available at pharmacies. You would need to go to the pharmacy to have the vaccine ordered and then book another appointment with your family doctor to have the vaccine administered. It would be your responsibility to ensure the proper vaccine temperature is maintained from picking up the vaccine at the pharmacy to when your doctor's appointment is. Other vaccines, such as the Yellow Fever vaccine can only be given at clinics that are certified by the Public Health Agency of Canada as a designated yellow fever provider, such as Whitehorse Travel Health Clinic. Pharmacists may offer to administer the vaccine however you are still not receiving personalized travel health advice.
The Whitehorse Travel Health Clinic is the only location that provides you with a one-stop shop for a travel health consult, vaccinations, and prescriptions if required (i.e.. malaria prophylaxis).
